Arvada holiday benefits nonprofit

On Thanksgiving morning, runners, families and residents of Arvada will line up for along the Van Bibber Trail for the 8th annual Turkey Chase 5k and Family Fun Run.

Created by Arvada resident Jackie Beaver, the Turkey Chase was founded as an alternative to the popular Turkey Trot race in Denver.

“We moved to Arvada around 10 years ago and always wanted to get involved in the community,” Beaver said. “It was fun to go down to the Turkey Trot in Wash Park, but it was too crowded and people are looking for an alternative that is a fun event.”

Initially started as a small, fun, family 5k run in West Woods with around 20 people, Beaver found the idea of a Thanksgiving Day race was popular amongst those in her community.

“People on the path said this was a great idea, and because of that great response on the path, I decided to continue,” Beaver said.

Since that time, Beaver has held the Turkey Chase as a benefit for the Denver Rescue Mission along several trails throughout Arvada to much success. Since its inception, the race has grown into a popular Thanksgiving tradition, with more than 700 participants trekking Arvada trails Thanksgiving morning.

“One of the best things about the race is its really nice to get out and be in the fresh air,” Alexxa Gagner, the Denver Rescue Mission's public relations director said. “It's a great motivation to get up early and get your body moving before the holidays kick in.”

Now a Denver Rescue Mission event, proceeds from the race benefit the people and programs at the mission, and help to provide meal boxes for more than 600,000 people throughout the Denver-Metro community every year.

“The runners and walkers who participate are providing hope for the people who come to the Mission for help every day,” Gagner said.

Registration for the race begins at 7:45 a.m. at the APEX Fieldhouse, 5724 Oak St., with the race beginning promptly at 9 a.m. rain, snow or shine. The cost of the race is $40, which includes your race number and packet, commemorative T-shirt, and light snacks following the race.

The race is sponsored by Arvada noodle company Grandmas Frozen Noodles, 4752 W. 60th Ave.
