While seeking help for physical ailments from her personal trainer, Arvada resident Jennifer Cavallaro thought: Why don't I do something like this for others?
So she did.
In 2013, Cavallaro created Upward Spiral Fitness and Nutrition Coaching, a personal coaching company focused on creating healthy habits by treating the whole person — mind, body and spirt.
“My trainer pushed me forward into that — I felt like I was too old to become a trainer — but he helped me get into shape and to do things I never thought I could,” Cavallaro said. “So in 2013, I put a gym in my own home.”
She works with individuals in their mid-30s to mid-60s, typically those who have some sort of recreational hobby — such as skiing or mountain biking—outside of weekly training Through Upward Spiral, clients learn how to eat healthy, build muscle and strength based off their individual situation. Cavallaro said she likes to meet her clients where they're at in their own lives, suggesting they make the little changes now that result in big changes later.
“I start with a small commitment, then see where they're at after a few weeks,” she said, giving the example of drinking four cups of water a day. “Let's see if we can get you up to five or even six before we tackle eight … I like to make it easy and doable for them so clients can feel like they are successful.”
One of Upward Spiral's 10 clients is friend Jasmene Santmyer.
“She makes custom workouts for me, as well as one for me at home,” said Santmyer, who has lost 13 inches since starting with Cavallaro last year. “She gave me the confidence to go out into the world and exercise in front of other people again.”
For clients like Santmyer and Dianna Stolz, both dental hygienists, the agility, strength and weight training help them not only to stay in shape but also to pursue other activities such as kickboxing, skiing and mountain biking.
“We do different types of workouts — she keeps it varied,” Stolz said. “I really feel like over the past few years I've gotten a lot stronger.”
