About me

We bought this place at the end of 2011, and truly have been blessed. We love it here.

Now the owner of Standley Lake Stables, 9430 Indiana St., I spend my days with my first love, horses. When I was 7, I got my first horse, Buck, and, boy, did I love that horse. I was responsible for him, this salt-and-pepper-colored animal whom I loved — he was my favorite thing. Your horse always is. There’s this connection. Over the years, I rode with the Westernaires and Hillcroft Acres, doing tricks, drills and jumps. I love it — I’m such a horse person.

Traveling around

And soon after I grew up, I met my husband, Jon. It’s a match made in heaven — he does hay and I do horses. Jon was then a pilot for Continental. After we married, we moved around a lot — Houston, Guam and Cleveland — to follow his job. With three kids, that was really interesting and fun. We ended up near the Ohio-Michigan border, which was near his family, allowing me to become closer with them and freelance for a paper.

A writer at heart

We moved back to Arvada and I began to teach with Jeffco schools. A language arts teacher and a former writer, I was inspired to teach kids how to read and write. And, oh, how they could. When you’re a writer, you’re a writer — it’s just in your heart. You observe things, talk to people and see the world differently. I see that now that I am writing a fiction novel, and I loved seeing that in kids.

Pursuing the next dream

Now that I’m retired from teaching, I spend my days with any of the more than 50 horses who board at our stables. We’ve only been here five years, but I hope to pay it off and turn half of our property into a horse rescue. We have several rescue horses here already who we take care of and employ in our club riding and summer camps. Everyone here that we support, whether through employment or friendship, wants to give horses a place to be loved and cared for while giving purpose to their lives. And I love that.
