I’ve always been interested in games and perhaps eight years ago now, I decided to create one.
“The Bermuda Crisis: Discovery Dawning,” a card game modeled in the Euro-style game style, where the theme is downplayed in favor of skill, takes players through secret missions, entices them to use magic, bartering and skills to decipher the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle. Where did the idea come from? Well, I’ve always been interested in that particular mystery and decided to combine it with my passion for board games.
I’m now a lawyer and family man living in Arvada with my wife and 3-year-old son, Tristan. Originally, I’m from Twin Falls, Idaho. I went to school there, where I spent a lot of time writing up stories for the newspaper and checking my opponents in the chess club. After graduating, I attended Michigan State University for law school. Soon after, my wife and I ended up here in Arvada. It was either the beaches of Seattle or the Rocky Mountains, so in 2011, we moved here.
Creating a game
I’ve always enjoyed the creative process of writing and figuring out how to tell a story, and I just applied that to gaming. Branded under Lysander Games, my company is named after my son. Since my initial design, we’ve created a few different revisions and gone through three major phases. This well-designed version is one I’m most proud of, and every time a review comes out I hold my breath, hoping it’s positive. And when it is — to see that validation of something you have put so much time into — it’s amazing.
To make it a reality, I’ve started a Kickstarter campaign, http://kck.st/1KDkmcX, where I plan to raise enough to have 1,500 copies of the game produced. I’m excited we’ve gotten this far. If we don’t raise enough, I’ll keep trying. I’d like to make several games under the company and fulfill a dream of mine.
Outside of gaming, I’ve written a fantasy book series, “The Legendary Triune,” which is a more jovial take on the Lord of the Rings. I also used to do magic shows, and I’m in an abusive relationship with the Buffalo Bills. I like other sports, too, but the Bills are my team.
Above all, we really enjoy the community here, and hope it will support local creativity.
