Letter to the Editor: Arvada supports the DREAM

Recently Arvada Mayor Marc Williams, with the support of the Arvada City Council, signed his support for the DREAM Act on a letter to Senators Bennet and Gardner. The letter asked the Senators to continue advocating for the immediate passage of the DREAM Act in Washington, and 50 other Colorado mayors and former mayors had already signed it, including two former Arvada mayors.

Mayor Williams and the Council should be commended for standing up for DREAMers who live in our community. These young people were brought to our country as children and have spent most of their lives here. They must have a clean criminal record and be working, in school, or in the military to qualify. We promised them that if they followed the rules and registered under DACA that we would protect them from deportation and provide them with a path to citizenship. It’s time for us to keep our promise.

By signing the letter, Mayor Williams and the Council took a stand for American and Arvadan values of inclusion and respect. I’m grateful for their support for this important initiative.
