Art Drop Arvada hides local art in public

Drops are held the first Friday and third Saturday of the month

Twice a month, art is scattered throughout Arvada for people to find and take home with them.

The idea is to connect the community with local artists and to get them excited about owning a piece of work.

“I was looking for a way to connect with more local artists when I was new to the community,” said Emily King, Arvada artist and founder of Art Drop Arvada. “Artists don't tend to be the most social or extroverted people, so it can be hard to find people to connect with.”

Art Drop Arvada launched in February of 2018 and over the past year had grown a following of more than 1,200 people.

Art Drop Arvada hides local art in public and community spaces throughout the city. They post hints on Instagram to @artdroparvada so the public can follow along and join the scavenger hunt. The art is free to the first person who finds it.

The drop happens every first Friday of the month in Olde Town Arvada to coincide with the First Friday Art Walk. It happens again every third Saturday of the month at a different Arvada park.

Each drop features a different artist. The artist provides six to 12 pieces of work to be found at each drop.

“I thought it would be fun to participate within the Arvada community and give back to it a little bit,” said illustrator Ken Kokoszka, who was the featured artist at the April 5 drop in Olde Town. “On social media there is a lot of 'look at me look at me,' so it was kind of fun to take a step back and not worry about a commercial aspect of it. To just create.”

The next art drop in Arvada will be April 20. To find out where, visit www.artdroparvada.com and follow @artdroparvada on Instagram.
