At 3:30 p.m. Nov. 8, a 10-year-old female student was struck by a car while walking on the sidewalk along West 58th Avenue near Dover Street, according to a statement from the Arvada Police Department.

The collision occurred when the vehicle, a white 1998 Jeep Cherokee, veered off the south side of the road and onto the sidewalk. The driver was initially headed east and continued in that direction after the collision, but returned to the site several minutes later.

Officers now have suspect Jose Manuel Morales-Reyes, 50, in custody at the Jefferson County Jail. He was arrested on suspicion of two felonies, vehicular assault and leaving the scene of a serious injury accident, and two misdemeanors, driving with no insurance and driving after license revoked.

Investigators say they are looking into whether the driver was under the influence.

The injured girl is recovering in a local hospital, with serious but not life-threatening injuries, according to police.
