40 years ago. No laptops, no cellular phones, no Google, no Apple, no Microsoft, no texting. A different world. Straight out of Havana, Cuba comes Orquesta Akokán — a blazing ensemble of deeply soulful mambo reminiscent of Benny Moré, Pérez Prado and banda gigante of the 1940s and ‘50s. Robust, time-tested musical architectures of son cubano and mambo are honored and modernized through a synthesis of the rich compositional styles of Havana, New York, and beyond. “A groove as intense as a runaway train” hails National Public Radio.

Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals
Aug. 17 at 7:30 pm.
In the mid-1960’s, classically-trained pianist and vocalist Felix Cavaliere quickly rose to the top as his band The Rascals produced hit after hit, their pioneering rock-driven sound influenced by music heard in the Bronx standing out from the pop of the British Invasion bands. Armed with a Hammond B3 organ and a distinct blue-eyed soul voice, hits like “Good Lovin’” and R&B-influenced “Groovin’”made The Rascals one of the most popular bands of the time; that popularity continues on through the decades, and culminated in Steven Van Zandt inducting them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

Squeeze first formed in 1973 brought together by an ad in a sweetshop window. By 1977 they had made their recording debut and enjoyed a string of hits which lasted until 1982. Over the years there have been solo careers and occasional separations, but the Ivor Novello Award-winning songwriting duo Chris and Glenn reunited ten years ago to relaunch Squeeze and have been touring, writing and recording together since.
