Party pays off

Party for Parks on April 5 at Red Rocks Visitor Center raised a net total of $80,000 to date for programs that connect children and families to nature.

The event celebrated the triple anniversary of three organizations that protect land, conserve natural resources and promote recreation: Great Outdoors Colorado, Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS), and Denver Mountain Parks. Combined, the organizations have helped preserve more than 62,000 acres of public land in Jefferson County. The celebration benefited the Jeffco Outdoors Foundation, a nonprofit formerly known as the Jeffco Open Space Foundation.

“Party for Parks is a shining example of the power of public-private partnerships,” said Tom Hoby, Director of Jefferson County Parks and Open Space. “By drawing on the support of the local business community and working together with our public partners, we raised significant funds to further the mission of getting more children and families outdoors.”

Drug disposal day

On Saturday, April 27, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will be joining law enforcement agencies nationwide to remove potentially dangerous controlled substances from our nation’s medicine cabinets. The DEA’s National Prescription Take-Back Day provides an opportunity for the public to surrender expired, unwanted, or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications for destruction. These drugs are a potential source of supply for illegal use and an unacceptable risk to public health and safety.

Sheriff’s representatives will be set up at two drop-off locations in the county on Saturday, April 27th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The locations are:

Dakota Ridge High School - 13399 W. Coal Mine Ave., Littleton (west parking lot)

Evergreen Fire Rescue - 1802 Bergen Pkwy., Evergreen

Prescription and over-the-counter solid dosage medications, (tablets and capsules) are accepted. Intravenous solutions, injectables, needles and oxygen containers will not be accepted. Neither will illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine.

Prescriptions should be removed from the original containers and placed in plastic bags prior to drop off.

Other drop off locations can be found at www.dea.gov

SCFD board appointments

New board members to the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) have been announced. Among them is Rob Johnson, appointed by the Jefferson County Commissioners to represent the county. Johnson is the co-owner of Wilson/Johnson Creative graphic design firm and photography studio. He is a Colorado native and graduate of the Art Institute of Colorado. Previously, Mr. Johnson served on the Jefferson County Cultural County from 2007-2012, including several years as co-chair and chair.

Governor John Hickenlooper has appointed Elaine Torres, the Community Affairs Director at CBS4. Douglas County Commissioners appointed Kathryn Spuhler, currently the SCFD chair, to a second term.

The SCFD was voter-created in 1988, “to provide for the enlightenment, entertainment, and education of the public.” More information is available at www.scfd.org.

20th Annual Courage Walk

Each spring, victims and victims’ advocates from the First Judicial District gather for the annual Courage Walk.

The Courage Walk coincides with National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, and recognizes the devastating impact of crime on victims and communities. The courage walk is a time to honor the strength and courage of those that have dealt with the aftermath of crime. It is also a time to support victims’ rights and services.

Donations are not required to participate in this event. However, if you would like to donate to assist victims in our community, please send checks to Victim Outreach Information (VOI), P.O. Box 5173, Golden, Colorado, 80401. Victim Outreach Information (VOI) is a nonprofit group that provides advocacy services to victims of crime in small local communities.

The walk is approximately one mile long and is wheelchair accessible. Dogs on leashes are welcome. For more information, call 303-271-5339.

If you would like to become a volunteer victim advocate, please contact Susan Sylvester, Victim Services advocate, at the Sheriff’s Office at 720-377-2003.
