The Denver-based Piton Foundation is providing free tax filing services for eligible families, an estimated 400,000 according to Piton who may qualify for federal tax benefits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit. Services will be available through the Tax Help Colorado program. The maximum income to qualify for the EITC this year ranges from $14,340 for a single person with no children, to $37,870 for a single parent with one child, and $51,567 for a married couple with three or more children. The credit can be as much as $6,044 for very low-income workers with children. The EITC operates by reducing the amount of taxes owed and increasing the size of the refund.
