The Arvada Community Garden is offering free gardening classes on several Wednesday evenings at the community garden.

The classes begin at 6 p.m. and will last about an hour, include handouts. They will take place in the barn or outside at the garden at 9195 W. 57th Ave., Arvada. Classes run from March through September.

The first class, “Starting Plants from Seed,” is March 18. It will be a short class to learn how to start plants from seed, including onions, tomatoes, peppers, cole crops and flowers. Includes selection of potting soil, containers to use, germination, lighting, watering, fertilizing, hardening off and final planting. Each participant will receive planting containers and tools, and several seedlings to take home to care for until planting time.

May 13, Having a Weed Free Garden

May 20, Backyard Beekeeping

In addition, Arvada residents interested in participating in the community garden can request at plot at the community garden. For $40 for the season, residents will receive a 12-by-22-foot garden plot, dawn-to-dusk year-round access, running ditch water, some plants and seeds, shared storage area, volunteer opportunities, greenhouse access, hose and tool usage, remote garden monitoring, community involvement and plenty of free advice. Half-size gardens are also available for $20. ADA raised bed plots are $25, and wheelchair plots cost $15.

Upon completion of the paperwork and remittance, you will be assigned a plot on a first come, first served basis. New member orientation will be in late April, ditch water is turned on and pumps started about the same time.
