On Feb. 13, the municipal police chiefs of Jefferson County — representing Arvada, Edgewater, Golden, Lakewood, Morrison, Mountain View, Westminster and Wheat Ridge — submitted a letter to the county commissioners requesting that additional funding be provided to the Jefferson County jail. The letter, states that “not having a fully operational jail is detrimental to all of our communities.”
A portion of the letter reads:
“Please know that we are fully aware of, and understand, the austere fiscal conditions that Jefferson County is currently facing. It is not our intention to try and dictate Jefferson County financial priorities. However, it is our duty to ensure the safety of our communities and when the county’s financial priorities impact that safety our voices need to be heard. We strongly believe that public safety should be the number one priority of government entities and adequately funding the Sheriff’s department is paramount to providing safety for the residents of Jefferson County.”
