Jeffco moves up grades 6-12 in-person start date

Target date of Feb 1, pushed up to give kids an extra week in classroom

Interim Superintendent Kristopher Schuh has made the decision to return middle and high school students to the classroom in a hybrid model beginning Jan. 25, 2021.

According to a press release from Jeffco Schools, Schuh’s decision was made in consultation with the Jefferson County Board of Education, public health, district leadership and school leadership. In a recent School Board meeting, parents who spoke out in the pubic comments section of the meeting were overwhelmingly in favor of starting the return to in-person school, ahead of the previous, tentative plan to consider in-person learning for grades 6-12 on Feb. 1.

The District said several factors influenced the decision to bring middle and high school students back earlier including current county-level COVID-19 case data, a strong desire of both students and families to return to in-person learning, a larger pool of guest teachers (substitutes) which can improve schools’ ability to sustain operations while responding to virus spread and quarantines and the improved availability of COVID-19 testing.

Elementary schools returned to 5-days per week in-person learning on Jan.19, as previously scheduled.

Logistics

The return to in-person learning brings with it an updated Food Service calendar.

For grades PK-5, in-person meal service will begin Jan. 19. Remote learners will be able to pick up meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Families can access meals for remote learners from their assigned home school and should contact their school for the pick-up schedule.

Families of students in grades 6-12 can access remote meals at Alameda, Arvada, Arvada West, Bear Creek, Columbine, Green Mountain, Jefferson, Pomona and Ralston Valley High Schools, and at Summit Ridge, Wayne Carle and Creighton Middle Schools prior to in-person learning starting for the semester.

Once in-person learning resumes for grades 6-12, students can access remote meals from their assigned home school. The District recommends contacting your home school directly to inquire about their schedule.

Meals will be available to in-person/hybrid learners for days they are not attending school in person. Families with younger children, not yet registered in school, can receive meals at their closest Jeffco school site.

Staffing help

The District is also putting out a call to join #TeamJeffco. Opportunities to help at a school by working as a Guest Teacher, Bus Driver/Bus Assistant, Custodian or Food Service worker are still available.

The District sees these paid opportunities as another way community members can help keep in-person learning running during the continued challenges presented by COVID-19. Guest Teacher jobs do not require a bachelor’s degree for the 2020-2021 school year and pay a rate of $150 per full-day.
