I see things differently. This is a time when our civic representatives must reflect on their responsibilities to show leadership and not to follow those with the loudest voices or deepest pockets in determining what is best for our community. Our leaders must turn to the wisdom of health experts on how to keep our community safe. These experts are encouraging simple but effective ways to cut down on the cases of COVID-19, and masks are part of the solution.
As for those shouting about personal rights, I would respond with the famous phrase “your rights end where my nose begins.” That thought is literally true today. Neither you nor I know who's sick. This is NOT a political issue, but a health issue. We need our government to protect us with thoughtful laws that fight COVID effectively. Mayor Valdes and council must use their voices to teach, and their actions to make positive peer pressure work. It is up to each of us to support their mandates in order to keep the “civil” in “civilization.”
