Letter to the editor: Educator loan forgiveness

Posted

I was thrilled to see the Educator Loan Forgiveness bill from my state Senator, Rachel Zenzinger, this session. Colorado has a severe shortage of teachers, especially in rural areas and in certain hard-to-fill positions. Young teachers coming out of college often cannot afford to live on a Colorado teacher’s salary, especially when they have student loan payments to make. This bill will pay up to $5,000 per year for up to five years as an incentive for teachers to serve in our schools. The Republicans killed a similar bill last year when they held the majority in the state Senate, but the bill passed this year under the Democratic majority. The importance of filling the educator pipeline with young, energetic, and qualified teachers for our state’s children cannot be overestimated. I’m grateful that Senator Zenzinger introduced this bill and encourage you to thank her for it.
Robin Kupernik,
Arvada
