If you’ve been reading about the extreme loss of tax revenue due to our new COVID economy, you will already know that Colorado is in trouble. For 11 years, our outdated tax laws have hindered our ability to fund our schools and roads despite the fact that our economy was booming. Now, in the face of 25% budget cuts needed, the cuts to government services will be tragic. If you have a child, drive a car, or breathe our air, you will be impacted.Sadly, Colorado’s current tax policy assesses a higher actual tax rate on our middle class than on the wealthiest 5%.
The Fair Tax Initiative will change this.If passed this November, it assesses a higher tax on folks who earn more than $250,000 annually, and gives the rest of us a tax cut.The net result is an additional $2 billion per year for the state of Colorado – half of which will be used to pay teachers. The other half can be used as needed, like to fix our roads and bridges. You can learn more at fairtaxcolorado.org.
If this seems like a good idea to you, find someone who is carrying a petition and sign it.If enough signatures are received, this initiative will be on our November ballot for you to vote yes on.This is the lifeline for Colorado to recover, instead of suffering for years to come.
Robin Kupernik,
Arvada
