Letter to the Editor: Supportive of single hauler in Arvada

"Last week, I watched a riveting City Council workshop on organized trash and recycling, and found the information helpful and exciting. I am grateful to city staff for working so long and so hard on negotiating such a strong contract benefiting the residents of Arvada, and I’m supportive of the contract for the following main reasons:

1) Recycling will be included in the cost, which will make recycling accessible to everyone. Currently, Arvada only recycles about 13% of its waste. I’m excited to see how much more our community will recycle once it’s affordable and easy. Arvada residents have indicated in the last 3 surveys that recycling is important to them, and this is the way to improve as a community.

2) During last summer’s Speak Up Arvada survey, residents indicated what they would like to see from an organized waste hauling system, and they indicated that reducing trash truck traffic was important to them. Reducing trash truck traffic is very likely to lead to more resilient roads, quieter and safer streets, cleaner air quality, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

3) This contract will provide Arvadans with more choices to save money, and finally provide Arvadans with group pricing that those in HOAs have already been privy to. Prices range from $11.50-$19.90/month, whereas most Arvadans currently pay between $20-30/month, so most Arvadans will see economic relief with this contract.

I look forward to Arvada becoming a more sustainable and affordable community."

Thank you :)
