It’s that time of year again, nice weather, blooming flowers. Unfortunately, bags of dog poop are also blooming along walks and trails. What’s wrong with dog owners!?Dogs are great, except for the steaming piles they leave behind. As a pet owner it’s your responsibility to pick it up. It’s a sign of progress there are fewer piles of poop on the sidewalk than before, but what’s with bags of poop left in their place? You put the poop in a plastic bag – Good Job! Now finish it!! Put the bag in a proper disposal receptacle. Do you think there’s a Dog Poop Fairy who comes along and picks up after YOU? I’ve heard the lame excuses, e.g., “I will pick it up on the way back.” Baloney! The bags never get picked up. “Oops, I forgot.” If you left your wallet or cell phone behind you would go back and get it, right?I know there are responsible owners who are conscientious about picking up after their pets and feel unfairly smeared by the accusation that dog owners are lazy, irresponsible jerks. My sincere apologies to you. Unfortunately, you are tarred by the bad apples. Perhaps you could save your good reputation by picking up after your irresponsible cohorts? Or better yet, courteously confront the offenders and remind them they are setting a bad example that leads to unwanted scrutiny, regulation, and general public opprobrium of dog owners as a whole.John Helfrich,Lakewood
