After my cancer diagnosis, I got more into trail running as a way to get away from everything associated with my cancer. I’d run and walk and do as much as I could, because I was on treatment.
Today, I am cancer free, working as a nurse and enjoying my time living in Lakewood.
I ran cross country in high school, and I’ve always liked running. I got into ultra-marathons after I was done with treatment. I wanted to see what my body could do, because I felt like I finally had control of my body.
Ultra-marathons are anything over a marathon. I’ve done a 50K before, and I’m gearing up to run a 100-mile ultra-marathon at the end of the summer.
Since I’m a young cancer survivor, I’ve met a lot of people who haven’t made it. I think of them when I’m in a hard place in those races. I think of those people that were runners and can’t do it anymore.
When I first finished an ultra-marathon, it felt amazing. You’re in so much pain, but then you just hang out at the finish, have a beer with your friends and celebrate. It’s kind of addicting in that way. You’re in this deep pain when you’re going through it, but then afterwards, it feels so good, and you feel so accomplished.
Outside of running, I love to ski. I’ve skied around 25 or 30 days this year. I have an Etsy shop, so I make lip balms and natural body stuff. I like arts and crafts and painting, too.
