Republic Services’ waste hauling trucks and trash cans adorned with the city of Arvada logo began dotting Arvada’s streets the week of July 5, as the city’s new single-hauler waste hauling program commenced service last week.
While many residents spoke favorably of their first week with the service, some reported confusion regarding what to do with their old cans and delays in receiving new carts.
Arvada’s Infrastructure Manager of Communication, Rachael Kuroiwa, said that all carts had been delivered by the end of the day July 7. Kuroiwa added that if a resident’s cart had not been delivered by their first service date, they may leave bagged trash on the curb to be removed free of charge.
“We can’t take any carts that are branded with a specific company,” Kuroiwa said. “If the company went out of business, or people purchased the can on their own, those we can accept.”
The city will be hosting large item drop-off events for residents to bring up to five oversized items to be brought to the landfill. The first drop off event will be July 24 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Stenger Sports Complex, and the second will be Aug. 14 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at North Area Athletic Complex.
Kuroiwa said that thought the project has had its share of hitches, she is hopeful that the utility will come to be a positive program for the city, and thanked residents for their patience throughout the rollout.
“It’s a very large project that effects a lot of households,” said Kuroiwa, “and we had about 30,000 carts to deliver. It’s had its challenges. I think we’ve gotten feedback that trash service happened — people put their trash out, they knew what day it was — and that’s what you want. You want to put your trash out and not really think about it.
“It’s a challenging transition for the community and the city,” Kuroiwa continued, “that hasn’t been hiccup-free. But we’re close and in a week of two, I think it’ll be running really well. We really appreciate everyone’s patience as we start a new utility for the city. We have a lot of gratitude and we’re excited to be at this milestone.”
Reactions from the community have been mixed.
June Ammerman, a longtime Arvada resident, said she was unhappy that the new waste hauling program utilizes a single hauler, stating that she would have preferred a contract with multiple service providers.
“I’m quite disappointed that it’s all down to one service and greatly reducing the value of so many other services,” said Ammerman. “My answer to that dilemma was to let this trash service have this section of the city and give everybody a piece of the pie. That would have been complicated, but it would have been very helpful to other trash companies. Now we just have one big one, and it cuts out the little guys.”
Ammerman added that she was glad there would be fewer garbage trucks on the streets but maintained that the single-hauler system was not her preference.
“It makes sense to have less of those big trucks rumbling on our streets all the time,” said Ammerman. “But there was a just a better way to do it, and I don’t think it happened by giving it all to one (hauler).”
Shannan Garrison said she recently moved from Denver to Arvada and was used to a single-hauler system. She said she didn’t understand the backlash against the program from the community.
“I’m new here,” said Garrison, “I moved from Denver to Arvada and was pretty used to one company that shows up at the same time every week. So, when I first moved here and there were multiple companies and trucks driving down every day I was like, `This doesn’t feel that fantastic.’
“I prefer a one-company system,” Garrison continued. “I thought they did great this week, they came, and they did it. To have so many people so grumpy was a little bit of a surprise because I felt like it was a beneficial way to help the community. Sometimes coming together gives you the better option.”
Lynn Thompson said that her first week of trash service went smoothly and she, like Garrison, had not previously lived in a municipality that required residents to arrange their own trash hauling.
“So far, so good,” said Thompson of her experience with the new trash program. “I received the correct sized cans a couple weeks ago. Tuesday was my first trash pickup, but it went fine! Put the can out, the truck came by and emptied it — kind of as expected! I’m happy to be adding recycling for about half the cost of my previous hauler.
“This is the first place I’ve lived where I had to arrange my own trash,” Thompson continued. “I actually have an even more controversial stance; I don’t think ‘option out’ should be an option. If they are truly trying to cut all the trucks and noise on our streets, a single option would be awesome for me. Maybe this is the most acceptable baby step towards that?”
