In a low-scoring affair Jan. 9 at Arvada West High School, the Lady Wildcats (8-6) escaped with the 43-39 victory over Northglenn (3-10, 1-1 in conference) thanks to a 12-8 run to close out the non-conference matchup.
Playing primarily six players throughout the night, Lady Norsemen starters Leticia Delgado, Ryan Paswaters, Kai Padilla, Nariana Nealy (seniors) and Emelyn Tineo-Gonzalez (freshman) accumulated the majority of the minutes. As AW rotated 13 players throughout the night (eight of which scored), Northglenn still hung around to the final buzzer.
Defensively in the opening frame, both teams combined to score just 15 points (8-7 AW lead). Fantastic energy on the Lady Norsemen side from Nealy in the rebounding department put her team in position for extra possessions. Taking advantage of the additional opportunities, Paswaters and Padilla led the way with four and three points respectively to open things in the first.
Northglenn tied the ballgame for the first time at nine apiece with 5:11 left in the second quarter. A minute and three seconds later, the road team captured the 10-9 lead with excellent continued defense. Arvada West then went on their first run of the night, outscoring Northglenn 12-4 to close out the quarter. Two three-pointers from senior Gabby Riser and four bench points from senior Savannah Tafolla struck the run.
However, Northglenn regrouped at halftime. With a 7-3 run of their own in the first four minutes of the third, Nealy and Tineo-Gonzalez asserted their will in the painted area on both ends of the court. While not allowing easy baskets defensively, the streaky Arvada West group only scored eight points in the quarter, as they led by two.
Tying the contest for the first time since early in the second quarter, the Lady Norsemen conquered that feat once again with five minutes left, 31-31. The following possession for Arvada West, however, they gained the lead right back on a three-pointer from senior Madi Pixler. AW never gave the lead up again.
Staying four points ahead the majority of the way in the final four minutes, Arvada West wiggled their way to their sixth straight victory. Not one player scored in double figures for the Lady Wildcats. Northglenn’s leading scorers included Paswaters (11 points), Delgado (nine points) and Nealy (six points).
In their next contest of the week against Hinkley (2-12) Jan. 11, Northglenn got back to their winning ways with the 49-45 conference win.
